STATEMENT

 

"V.A.Kurochkin International Competition of

Young Singers of Operetta and Musical".

 

1. GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS

 

1.1. Founders and Organizers of the Competition

The international Competition of Young Actors of Operetta and Musical named after V.A.Kurochkin (further - the Competition) is founded by Association of Musical Theatres of Russia, Sverdlovsk State Academic Musical Comedy Theatre and supported by the Ministry of Culture of Russian Federation, the Union of Theatrical Figures of Russia, the Ministry of Culture of Sverdlovsk Region and Gerard Vasilyev's Fund on Preservation and Development of a Genre of Operetta.

 

The organizer of the Competition is Sverdlovsk State Academic Musical Comedy Theatre

 

1.2. Time and Place of the Competition

The Competition is held every alternate years in Yekaterinburg on the stage of Sverdlovsk State Academic Musical Comedy Theatre. (1st Competition was held on November 6th-12th, 2006. 2nd Competition—September 25th - October 1st, 2008.)

 

1.3. Purposes and Mission of the Competition

  • to make known the brightest and talented young performers being possessed of a wide complex of expressive means including singing, speech, stage movement, dance, acting skill;
  • to get acquainted with representatives of various national, theatrical and vocal schools;
  • to stimulate creative activity of the young people in theatres, musical and theatrical schools.

 

1.4. Jury of the Competition

  • The jury of the Competition may include leading masters of musical theatre (actors, directors, conductors, choreographers), musicologists, theatrical critics, representatives of the Union of Theatrical Figures of the Russian Federation, tutors of specialized schools ( such as theatrical and musical high schools, conservatories, etc.), well-known representatives of arts management.
  • The jury structure is formed by Organizing committee of the Competition and confirmed by Founders of the Competition. The jury structure must be announced not later than 2 weeks before the beginning of the next Competition.
  • The operating procedure of the jury of the Competition is regulated by special Provisions on work of the jury of the Competition (Appendix -1) confirmed by Founders of the Competition.
  • Decisions announced officially by the jury of the Competition are considered to be final and cannot be appealed.

 

2. TERMS OF PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION

 

2.1. Requirements to attendees of the Competition

  • Professional actors of musical as well as other theatres can enter the Competition (the latter, the ones of other theatres, have to possess at least undergraduate musical education), students of theatrical and musical higher educational institutions of Russia and foreign countries too.
  • The attendee's age must not exceed 35 years (inclusive) on a date of the beginning of the Competition.

 

2.2. Nominations of the Competition

The Competition has got the following nominations:

  • Vocal—Stage Art (according to sections "operetta" / "musical") - soloists (women and men);
  • Choreographic Art (according to sections — soloists /duets).

 

2.3. Entrance Fee

  • The Entrance fee of participation in the Competition amounts to 500 roubles.
  • The Entrance fee is transferred on the settlements account of the Organizers of the Competition after a candidate receives confirmation on registration of the application form signed by the Organizers of the Competition.
  • Candidates who do not have paid entrance fees are not allowed to compete
  • In case when a registered candidate refuses participation in the Competition, the entrance fee is not recovered.

 

2.4. Registration of Application Forms for Participation in the Competition

  • Candidates who want to enter the Competition have to fill in the Attendee's Application form according to the example. (Appendix -2).
  • Application forms and all covering documents are accepted in printed or electronic format (accordingly - by mail or e-mail, addresses of dispatch are pointed out in Appendix -2).
  • It is necessary to enclose copies of the following documents with the Application form:

- ID (passport)

- Diploma;

- Diplomas or certificates confirming titles of a prize- winner of creative competitions or possession of other creative awards.

  • It is also necessary to enclose a color Candidate's photo-portrait, 9 х12 size (stage portraits are not accepted!) with the Application form. Electronic files are accepted in tiff, jpg format, from 500 КB up to 1,5 MB.
  • Candidate's Application form cannot be registered in case of:

- inadequate filling in Attendee's Application form;

- lack of any necessary document;

- if a candidate does not meet the attendees' requirements of the Competition.

  • Candidates' Applications forms are accepted to registration not later than 25 days before the announced date of the beginning of the next Competition.
  • Candidates are notified about the end of registration by a missive from the Organizing committee of the Competition.
  • Candidates are responsible for reliability of the data pointed out in the Application form.
  • The Organizers of the Competition reserve the right to use all information and photo materials sent by Candidates in the PR-purposes and also give these data to mass-media.

3. TERMS OF THE COMPETITION

 

3.1. Financial Terms

  • Attendees of the Competition have to take upon themselves transport expenses connected with travelling to Yekaterinburg and back.
  • Attendees of the Competition are guaranteed to have accommodation which is free-of-charge, meals on preferential terms but only at the period of participation in the competitive program.
  • If attendees arrive at the Competition with their accompanists and partners who are not considered to be attendees of the Competition, they have to carry out expenses of mentioned accompanists or partners' stay at the Competition by themselves.
  • The Organizers of the Competition do not provide the attendees, their partners and accompanists with any kinds of insurance cover.

 

3.2. Organizing Terms

  • Competitive tests include two basic rounds in the form of public performances and the final gala concert which at the same time is considered to be the final round of the Competition.
  • Competitive performances are possible both solo ones and in ensemble with the partners participating or not participating in the Competition.
  • Attendees who are admitted to participation in the final round (gala concert) by decision of the Jury of the Competition and by results of this round do not get titles of Prize-winners, become Diploma holders of the Competition.
  • Diploma holders and Prize-winners of the Competition are obliged to perform without fee at an additional commercial gala concert by will of the Organizers of the Competition.
  • The order of performances is determined by sortition before the beginning of 1st round and it remains the same within 2nd round.
  • The competitive program declared by the attendee at the official registration can be defined more precisely (no more than one replacement is admitted) on a day of arrival at the Competition and henceforward the program is not liable to any changes.
  • The order of performances and repertoire of gala concert attendees are fixed by the Organizers of the Competition proceeding from art criteria.
  • Organizers reserve the right to carry out both audio and video recording of the Competition, its further use is left to the Organizers' discretion. It is forbidden to do video records and photographs during competitive listening as well as gala concert without official permission.
  • The Organizing committee of the Competition let each attendee rehearse with a professional accompanist and a sound man. Duration of rehearsals before 1st and 2nd rounds is no more than 15 minutes for 2 numbers.
  • Attendees who wish to perform in the 2nd round being accompanied by the orchestra are obliged not later than a week prior to the beginning of the Competition to provide the Organizers of the Competition with the score and orchestral parts of competitive numbers in case if the Organizers have not got any specific musical material, otherwise attendees are obliged to declare officially replacement of a number.

3.3. Creative Terms

3.3.1. Requirements to performances of attendees in nomination "Vocal—Stage Art" in 1st round.

  • 1st round competitive listening is held to the accompaniment of a grand piano or music score (background music).
  • Attendees perform 2 varied numbers adapted for the stage, and one of them should be obligatory in Russian.
  • Classical works (which belong to composers of Viennese and neo-Viennese periods, as well as arias, duets of comic operas and Soviet operettas) can be performed only to the accompaniment of a grand piano in 1st round.
  • Making use of a microphone is admissible only for performances in a genre of musical, variety and jazz manner of singing.
  • One of the performances should necessarily include a dramatic scene or a recitative which can do possible to estimate attendee's acting qualities and diction.
  • The total duration of two performances must not exceed 12 minutes.

3.3.2. Requirements to performances of attendees in nomination "Vocal—Stage Art" in 2nd round.

  • 2nd round competitive listening is held to the accompaniment of the orchestra or music score.
  • Attendees perform two or one number (the decision on quantity of numbers in 2nd round is taken by the Jury of the Competition depending on quantity of attendees of the round).
  • Classical works (which belong to composers of Viennese and neo-Viennese periods, as well as arias, duets of comic operas and Soviet operettas) can be performed only to the accompaniment of the orchestra in 2nd round. Making use of a microphone is not admissible for performances in classical vocal manner.
  • Attendees perform in a genre of musical, variety or jazz vocal manner making use of a microphone to the accompaniment of score music or the orchestra (it depends on attendee's will).
  • One of the performed numbers should necessarily enable to estimate attendee's rhythmical moving qualities and choreographic preparation.
  • The total duration of two performances must not exceed 12 minutes. (In case if one number is performed in 2nd round, duration of performance must not exceed 6 minutes.)
  • One of two works performed in 2nd round can be reiteration of the work performed in 1st round. (In case if only one number is performed in 2nd round, reiteration of the work of 1st round is not allowed.)

3.3.3. Requirements to performances of attendees in nomination "Choreographic Art".

  • Attendees of 1 and 2 rounds must perform choreographic numbers which have genre signs of operetta and musical as well as staging elements. Performance of classical ballet variations is not welcomed. Music of choreographic numbers can be selected by an attendee irrespective of its origin: whether it is written for dancing in a selected work or it is a part of a vocal piece or it is an example of instrumental music.
  • Competitive performances of 1 round are held to the accompaniment of a grand piano or music score; the ones of 2 round are held to the accompaniment of music score or at attendees' will and Organizers' opportunity they can be accompanied by the orchestra.
  • Attendees of 1 round perform 2 varied choreographic numbers enabling the Jury to estimate both possession of the technique of execution and attendee's artistic skills.
  • Attendees of 2 round execute two (or one number - the decision on quantity of numbers in 2nd round is taken by the Jury of the Competition depending on quantity of attendees of the round). One of two works performed in 2nd round can be reiteration of the work performed in 1st round. (In case if only one number is performed in 2nd round, reiteration of the work of 1st round is not allowed.)
  • The total duration of two performances must not exceed 10 minutes (duration of one number cannot be more than 5 minutes.)
  • Attendees being declared soloists are estimated individually irrespective of the fact if they perform solo or in a duet.
  • Attendees being declared participants of a duet are not estimated individually, they get a common point for both participants.

 

4. COMPETITION AWARDS*

 

4.1. Prize - winning fund.

Total prize-winning fund of the Competition amounts to 300 000 roubles

 

4.2. The following prizes have been instituted at the Competition:

 

Grand Prize -  30 000 roubles

It is awarded only to one attendee irrespective of nomination.

 

First Prize - 20 000 roubles

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Operetta" (male/female)

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Musical" (male/female)

"Choreographic art" - "Soloist"

"Choreographic art" - "Dance in Duo"

 

Second Prize - 15 000 roubles

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Operetta" (male/female)

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Musical" (male/female)

"Choreographic art" - "Soloist"

"Choreographic art" - "Dance in Duo"

 

Third Prize - 10 000 roubles

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Operetta" (male/female)

"Vocal—Stage Art" - "Musical" (male/female)

"Choreographic art" - "Soloist"

"Choreographic art" - "Dance in Duo"

 

Prize of Spectators' Affections

It is awarded to one of the attendees selected to be staged in the Final Competition round according to results of spectators' voting at a gala concert of the Competition.

4.3. Organizers of the Competition announce institution of Special prizes before the start of every next Competition after acceptance of the corresponding Statement approved by the Competition Founders.

4.4. State, private, commercial enterprises, companies, creative unions, representatives of mass-media and other organizations reserve the right to institute their own Special awards but only according to the agreement with the Competition Founders.

4.5. The jury of the Competition reserves the right not to award one or several instituted prizes depending on results achieved by attendees. The jury of the Competition has no right to divide prizes between two or more attendees (with the exception of cases when dancing duets participate in competition).

4.6. A Winner of any of the main prizes can become also a holder of Special prizes and awards instituted at the Competition.

4.7. Only Final round attendees can become holders of Special awards and prizes instituted at the Competition.

4.8. The amount of prizes can be transferred on a settlement account of the attendee (with the exception of foreign citizens). Awards are not exchangeable for cash. Income tax is raised out of all monetary prizes.
